This is my 2nd year entering UK Songwriting Contest, and I’m pleased that my song “Black & White” is a semi-finalist in the Adult Contemporary category.

UK Songwriting Contest

an interesting musical opportunity is in your near future

My friend got this from a fortune cookie this weekend. We were delighted to see that a musical opportunity was emerging in the horizon. =)

On March 14, 2009, a group of people passionate about songwriting gathered at Home Brew Coffee Company in San Dimas and showcased their songs for the night. Each person showcased 2 songs they wrote for the FAWM challenge. It was nice to meet the musicians in person. Wonderful music rang and danced around the place, swirling with the warm and awakening aroma of coffee. I am glad to have been a part of it.

One of the songs I played was Black & White.

And here’s the wonderful poster designed for the event by Steven Guiles:

Concerto in F by Gershwin is beautiful & moving. Of course the famous Gershwin piece, Rhapsody in B, is exhilarating, but Concerto in F has a different scent of beauty in it, it opened my ears.

I attended Jean-Yves Thibaudet’s performance on Concerto in F @ Walt Disney Concerto Hall on Feb 12, 2009, it was my first time listening to that piece of music and my ears welcomed it very much, and a smile was put on my face while I was listening to it. Hadn’t felt such genuine happiness in a long time.

As technology advances and anything web-based is just slowing expanding its claw over all territory in its path, e-mails, once used to be only black and white and text-only, has now dressed themselves up with colorful backgrounds and images and clickable links and such, but they yet have to be completely acquainted with CSS, the governor of style in the web universe, and so working with e-mails + CSS sometimes can cause some head-banging (might that just be an attempt to add sound to the e-mails?)…

Recently I found this page containing very useful information on compatibility on CSS and popular e-mail clients, might this shed some light onto the realm of styling e-mails:

Once again I’m reminded to live every day like it’s the last one. Life and death – two things that are completely out of human’s grip. We can only control how we face them. While there’s light this second, it could be utter darkness the next; warm hands could be claimed by frost the next minute.

Time continuously ticks as its steel heels knock on the ceramic ground. Microscopic sand trickles swiftly down the flask, escaping the finest woven net. You might be mesmerized looking at the grains of gold glittering in the sun, and exclaim how gracefully they glide; you might want to stretch out your arms to try to reach for the flask and turn it upside down, only to realize you’re actually standing on top of the pile of sand, sealed inside the transparent glass…

So by “life and death”, I’m reminded again to seize every chance, before it evaporates. There’s no “redo”, “undo”, “rewind” or “replay” button…

The shimmering torrent is pretty to look at, I only hope to not slip away with it mutely, leaving no trace.

I’m glad the LA fire is not a threat anymore, all I could think of Sunday afternoon was how I could protect my childhood photos and things/memories from elementary/secondary school… It’s funny at moments like those the most important things are paper that has turned yellow and photos which colors aren’t vibrant anymore, instead of the newest gadget just purchased or the most expensive piece of clothing/jewelry I own.  I felt like I could hear the police bang on the door and the shouting of “you’ve got 5 mins!!” any second… luckily that did not happen.  I’m grateful that I’m lucky, and I wish those who are gravely affected by this fire will be okay.

The blackened hillside I drive by everyday has stained the air and the memories of some people now…

This is another song that I edited the lyric for fun. The original song is “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now”. The new lyric is in Cantonese. This was actually for a friend’s wedding. For people from Hong Kong, there’s a tradition for the bride’s girlfriends to play games with the groom before he can “win” the bride and take her to the wedding ceremony. For this instance, one of the games was for the groom to sing this song for his very lovely wife-to-be who was anxiously waiting for him to “pass” all the games to take her away.

Christmas is coming, chipmunks are singing:
